Word is that the leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies are eating very well in Pittsburgh. In keeping with the Obamas’ focus on local food economies and best practices in agriculture, the main G20 venues practice completely sustainable, local, and primarily organic food sourcing.

The opening G20 reception and working dinner was held at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a facility that received an LEED Silver certification for its design, construction, and operation as a high performance green building. Attendees sipped fair-trade coffee, their food waste was composted, and paper products, cans, bottles, and plastic were recycled.

The David E. Lawrence Convention Center, also LEED certified, is the site of scheduled G20 meetings. The center’s rooftop garden will provide lettuce, eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes for a working breakfast and lunch, supplemented by products sourced through the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture. Even the ‘grab-and-go’ quick-service meals served to the attendant media are packaged with compostable dishes and cups. The menus are not being released until the close of the summit due to the intense security considerations and screening required by both White House and State Department protocols.

As is the tradition at these events, Michelle Obama will present a commemorative gift to the G20 spouses. Also reflecting the Obama’s food policy agenda, the specially-designed porcelain tea set is being bundled with a glass vase filled with honey from the White House garden’s beehives- the first-ever hives in the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt’s WWII victory garden. The White House’s 2 beehives are expected to produce more than 100 pounds of honey this year, so there shoule be plenty of honey to be handed out as state gifts.
